On Alex Stolze's debut solo EP "Mankind Animal", the violin marries a controller, classical
flirts with midi and songs get caught in a loop. Playfully arranged, as if Arthur Russell had
lived to see the digital age and swapped his cello for a 5 string violin. The helplessly sad
string arrangements are countered by bubbling beats, softly asserting a dominance, while
Alex' voice floats above it all.
"Where to start if you want to change a system?" For Alex, the violin is the focal point of all
this, everything else is governed by her. Fragile, sensitive and mysterious. Through the
textures, voice, found recordings and barely present fragments, relationships between
recycled soundscapes are formed. Looped improvisation one could say. Listening again
starts to slowly reveal present song structures, the veils around the worlds unravel – for a
brief moment it seems clear where we have been going, where we are heading.
»That’s how we survived long winters and ice age periods« (»Mankind Animal«).
